Biography

  Source
Walter attended a mining school in London prior to travelling to Australia where he lived for sixteen years working in the Western Australian gold fields at Coolgardie. He returned home in 1910 for a short stay before taking up a post as mine manager for a company named A. Rudeberg in the Gold Coast (now Ghana). It was in the Gold Coast that he contracted malaria from which he suffered periodic bouts for the rest of his life. He returned home during the Great War and married Winifred in 1916. Having a lifetime interest in herbal remedies, he opened a herb and health food shop in Chatham. The business which included a busy postal service flourished and he soon opened other shops in Maidstone and Gillingham. The death of his wife in 1938 and the start of the Second World War saw a decline in trade and the shop closed upon his death in 1943.
