Nellie entered the Salvation Army training home at Clapton in 1917 and was commissioned after her training and worked in the United Kingdom until 1926 when she was transferred to India. She served about 23 years in India and was eventually promoted to Brigadier. During World War 2 she volunteered, amongst others, for war work and pioneered the work on the Arakan [1] front, close to the Japanese lines. For this service to the Allied troops she was awarded the Burma Star.
