Known by his family as Hugh, he was drowned at sea serving on board the ship 'Northampton'. His brother George (Arnold Safroni) dedicated one of his books to his memory 'Sailor and Beachcomber'

Pictures of flag ships of the time perhaps include the actual ship he served on.

Violet Constance St.John's album included this picture of Hugh. On this one Larry says "Violet has written 'Hugh Middleton drowned at sea from P & O Boat [I think it is] he was 2nd mate'".
