Elizabeth Swain, born ca 1769, married Samuel Scriven, widower, Mar 5,1793, Lyme Regis. Samuel, bapt. Nov 28, 1751 was the son of Timothy Scriven, (1720-1803), and Martha, née Cousens, who married, 1749, at Melcombe Regis. Samuel and Elizabeth had six children,Thomas Swain Scriven,(1796 -1853), Martha Scriven, (1798 - 1862), d. New York, Elizabeth Scriven, (ca1800 - 1827), Samuel Swain Scriven, (ca 1802 - 1883), Emma Scriven,(1804 - 1834), and George Swain Scriven,(1805 - 1863), d. New York. Elizabeth died Jul 23, 1841.
Samuel Scriven had previously married Sarah Hutching, 1778, Lyme Regis. They had four children, of whom their one daughter, Sarah Hutching Scriven, married Thomas Swain in Bristol, 1802. Sarah Hutching Senior, their mother, had died by 1792. From the census information , it is now clear that this Thomas Swain was the youngest child of John and Martha, which apparently means that Thomas was marrying his brother-in-law’s daughter, i.e., his niece by marriage. Thomas Swain and his wife Sarah had four children, Naomi, b. Dec 28, 1807, Devon, Emily, b. Nov 9, 1811, Stoke Damerel, Devon, Walter,b. Oct 1,1813, Stoke Damerel, and Henry, b.ca 1822, Devon.
